BEAUTY AND THE BEHOLDER

‘What a beautiful speech’... ‘Isn’t She a beauty?’... ‘That picture is very beautiful’....

We must have all heard countless phrases depicting the quality of a particular thing, place or person. The quality of being attractive, fine, pleasing or the state of comeliness – a simple dictionary definition of the term ‘beauty’. All of which are ascribed to being subject to the ‘eyes of the beholder’. The most obvious reason being that there is the widest disparity in public opinion as to the criteria for beauty.

Why is this? Our uniqueness as individuals alone is to blame for this. We are different, one from the other as A is from Z and the sooner we grasp this, the better we will understand certain things.
Our differences in appreciation is easily seen in our preferences. Whether in music, paintings, pictures, movies et cetera. This is best summed up in the funny phrase, ‘One man’s food is another man’s poison’.

Beauty in persons is often attributed to facial symmetry, skin tone, shape, voice et cetera. And certainly varies from place to place and culture to culture. This of course has had terrible by-products as people who do not fall into the apparently desired lot, tend to develop – depending on the individual in question – a level of insecurity or low self-esteem.

Another aspect of beauty in persons can be said to be in character. Character defines a person’s actions, reactions, responses and approaches to things. Physical beauty is undoubtedly a very attractive quality but character is of lasting effect. There are fewer things in life more eye-catching than good character.
It is best that we understand that beauty(in persons still) is nothing without confidence. Confidence in who you are and have the ability to become, in what you have to offer, what you can do and can learn to do, and so much more, contributes to your real worth as a person.

Beauty in general, is perceptive, subjective and relative. And should be understood as such.
What is your view on beauty? Is it entirely dependent on the beholder? Is it truly relative? Do leave your thoughts in the comments.

  1. It's a beautiful piece. Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I totally agree. But there is much more than the eye can behold. You talked about character. I know, from experience, that character is the only thing that out-lives the beauty that the eyes behold. When beauty fades, the hues change ànd the curves and contours disappear, character is what holds on. If a beautiful woman lacks character, the man in her life will be blinded to see the physical beautifulness. If a wealthy man lacks character, he may have very many friends, just because of his money. But watch out, if the money is nowhere to be seen, all the friends will go. But a man of character will always have quality friends, anytime, any day, anyhow.

  2. Our definition of beauty indeed varies...in the end, it all in the eyes of the beholder. But this kind of physical beauty can easily be outlived.

Nothing, and I say nothing again beats the beauty of character.
We all have our unique kind of beauty so it's no need to feel less of your kind of beautiful because someone else doesn't see it.

Because you are being you, then you are BE_U_TIFUL.
