Science or
Art - the almost age-long argument of which is superior will most likely not be
settled for another hundred years. But there are few grounds where they meet in
such symphony that they cannot be separated, any from the other. Colour is one
of such where we observe this phenomenon.
How we see
colour is a science in itself and how colour speaks to us is art – at least how
I see it.
Apart from
the kindergarten knowledge of primary and secondary colours, colours have
different effects on us, no matter how little. So much that it is a very
important factor in marketing as it undeniably influences consumer
perception of different goods and services.
A few
examples should be more elucidative.
Red
‘Roses are red...’
And yes, those aren’t roses. The colour red is one of the most controversial
colours. From Nollywood Juju to Hollywood romantic dates, this colour is
associated with quite a lot - Love and
lust being just one of the many. It is also associated with power, strength,
action and activity. And for some reason, red dresses are more eye-catching
than most other dress colours.
Green
The colour of Mother nature herself. Green is as simple as it
is beautiful. It is associated with health and vitality, as well as fertility, productivity and prosperity.
‘green with envy’ is
not just another saying as this colour is also linked to envy and jealousy.
Maybe not so simple after all.
Blue
Possibly the most famous colour(and not saying that because
it’s my favourite colour). Blue is associated with masculinity, happiness and
relaxation. It is even employed in lighting and decor, for its anti-suicidal or
anti-depressing properties. Now you know why the sea and sky are blue and why
they both have such calming effects.
Pink
Many are against the notion that pink is an entirely female
colour. Well, pink is associated with femininity as well as sincerity and obviously
is the more popular colour for girl toys and makeup brands.
Yellow
Yellow is associated with warmth, calm and happiness. Little
wonder it is found that though interests change with age, a lot of children
prefer yellow colours. It also conveys a sense of inexpensiveness or better
yet, affordability, and is one of the most common colours incorporated in
themes of fast food joints and restaurants.
Colour attributes vary across cultures and reasons behind
individual preferences also vary. Psychology says its part: warm colours like
red, yellow and orange are appetite-stimulating and capture attention. A vast
majority of first impressions are built on the colours worn by the people
involved, with red and blue leading to stronger impressions and black
increasing chances of hire in job interviews. Among many others. Colour therapy
refers to use of the associated effects of the various colours in dealing with
some human issues.
So many other colours remain, with even more attributes.

Without colours the world would be a boring place to inhabit . I think even the blind also see colours too because it is a thing of the mind. As an artist, I also know that colours are spiritual and they posess the power to communicate.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your educative piece.
More inspiration Bob.
Thank you very much sir... The part about the blind probably seeing colour too got me.
DeleteThanks a lot for sharing this.
It was enlightening. It's intriguing to discuss colours in this perspective. And what's this world without colours? Thank you very much Bob for this piece and I'm glad we both have something in common, blue is my favorite colour.
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad too. Blue all the way. Thank you so much for this
DeleteI love blue
ReplyDeleteNice one
Another for blue. I knew blue owned the world...ha.
DeleteThank you
I agree with you art and science appreciate colour quite differently. An artist might pick up a flower and say it's beautiful and all. A scientist on the other hand appreciates this beauty but in a different way. There's also beauty at small dimensions, the structural arrangement that makes the colour appear that way and how they are able to attract insects for pollination. Insects see colour, same as other lower animals but does that mean it appeals to them aesthetically? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteFor me I love black anything darker than black. Jet black, matte black, whatever black. Lol.They say those who love black usually have the most colourful mind. I hope there's a theory for that.
As usual you've done a wonderful job on this. Keep it up 3B.
As always, you never fail to leave food for thought. Black lovers and most colorful minds? No matter what psychology says I'm sticking with blue...haha.
DeleteBlack is also very lovely by the way, maybe my 3rd best,I don't know.
Thank you so much
Awesome
ReplyDeleteThank you very much
DeleteNice piece and very creative... Blue all the way though, you can't go wrong with Chelsea ππ...I actually think the perception of an artist will always be different from a scientist. For instance, science gave us pink amongst other colours that doesn't appear on the rainbow and I'm sure more will follow including giving meaning to some colours like red signifying danger and used to indicate "life" in science especially in electronics and green signifying stability or neutrality
ReplyDeleteKeep it up broπ
Wow...Didn't even think of it like that. Thanks for sharing this
DeleteNa Cisco oooππ
DeleteCisco... No wonder the Chelseaππ... All's good
