THE POWER OF WORDS: ARE WORDS OVERHYPED?

Have you ever been put off by someone’s talking? Or not wanting to associate with someone because of what they were likely to say? No one is a rock, yes, but is there something else to words, that make them the weapons or tools that they are today, depending on their use?

The word ‘word’ itself has so many definitions. But a general concurrence is that it can be heard but can’t be seen, can be ‘felt’ but not touched. How does something of such characteristics have the power it is said to hold? Or does it really?

Dry branches

Well, words have been proven to have direct and indirect, short to long-term, psychological and mental effects people and also other things. Most popular are the plant experiments, where two or more plants were planted and separated. With one spoken to with positive words and the other, negative. Over time, the one spoken to positively, was found to have grown better than the other.

Neuroscientists have proven that negative words induce release of hormones associated with stress and anxiety. This should probably explain why we can come out of a dialogue or argument with a headache. Positive words have also been proven to affect our outlook and perception, then our reality.

‘As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he’

Our thoughts are translated to words, and our words when used with occasion, become our language. Word choice has never been more important as our words undeniably affect our results.

Aside from how your words affect you personally, they can also be constructive or destructive to others as well. From immediate physical signs to extremes of mental and emotional trauma lasting years, such is the power of misused words.

Leafy tree

The two different pictures of the same tree at different times can well be an example of the possible effects words will eventually lead to, when either positive or negative. And as with almost every other thing, the ultimate reveal is made by time.

Would you want to try it out for yourself on the negative side? Is choice of words really vital? Are words just words?
